Jukurrpa Bikes – The Dot Painted Mountain Bike Experience
This half day mountain bike experience will leave lasting impressions and offers a real insight into the history and culture of Mparntwe (Alice Springs). Learn firsthand the cultural significance of this region and associated stories from someone who knows the land and shares his story.
Departing town, travel along Lhere Mparntwe (Todd river), where we stop at a sacred site. Here, we are officially welcomed in Arrernte, the local tribe and language group. Learn of the traditional name for the area of Alice Springs – Mparntwe – literally meaning meeting place.
Continuing on towards Ntaripe (Heavitree Gap), you are given an explanation into this area of importance for traditional men’s business and the storage place for important objects.
Following the mountain range in a westerly direction, we hear the creation story of Alhekulyele, the wild dogs. Traveling on to the cultural precinct, we learn the history of Albert Namatjira and the beginnings of the contemporary art form Papunya Tula. We visit the final resting place of Albert, once an unmarked grave. Albert was also known as the first citizen.
Traveling along Larapinta Drive back into town, we visit an Aboriginal owned and operated, Art and Cultural Centre. We then ride on to visit Choritja, regarded as the real central point of Mparntwe along the river towards the Old Telegraph Station which we visit. Next we cross Lhere Mparntwe (Todd River) and return to the centre of town to enjoy a morning or afternoon tea.
